Coat & Coat Care

This breed has a double coat. The top coat is long, straight hair which is considered water repellant which keeps the dog safe from harsh weather conditions. The under coat is short & thick which helps to keep their body temperature up in harsh conditions.

Although the Sheltie coat is on the long side, it needs little maintenance. Brushing their coats every week or two and bathing when necessary is sufficient. Trimming their hair to keep it off of the ground is best for this breed. If this breed is in a warmer climate, their need for more brushing increases to prevent matting.
