Shetland Sheepdog Breed Overview

Want to bring home an adorable Shetland Sheepdog puppy for sale? You’ve come to the right place. At Keystone Puppies, our mission is to help Sheltie puppies find their forever homes. In addition to Shetland Sheepdogs, we work with a range of other breeds — including Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Mini Sheltidoodles, and more! All our puppies are bred with the highest standards of ethical integrity — free of common genetic defects that impact less responsible breeders — and are raised in happy homes where they’re treated like part of the family before becoming part of yours!

The Shetland Sheepdog is a breed of dog that was originally developed in the Shetland Islands, off the coast of Scotland. The primary purpose of the breed was to herd sheep, and they were bred for their ability to work in rough and often remote terrain.

Today, Shelties are still used as working dogs on some farms, but they have also become popular pets. They are intelligent and loyal dogs that form close bonds with their families. Shetland Sheepdogs are relatively small dogs, making them well-suited to life in an urban apartment. Despite their small size, Shelties are extremely active dogs and need plenty of exercise. They are also very intelligent and can be easily trained to perform a variety of tricks.

If you’re looking for a smart, affectionate and versatile companion, the Shetland Sheepdog may be the perfect breed for you.

Sheltie Puppies Temperament

Shetland Sheepdogs, or Shelties as they are often called, are intelligent, active dogs that make great companions. They are curious and playful, but they can also be patient and gentle.

Shelties are very devoted to their families and love being part of the action. They are protective of their homes and are quick to sound the alarm if strangers approach. At the same time, Shelties are not aggressive dogs and will usually only bark when there is a good reason.

Overall, Shelties make wonderful pets for people who are looking for an active, loyal, and loving dog.

Shetland Sheepdog Puppy Health Considerations

Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 12-14 years — our Shetland Sheepdogs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Sheltie puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones.

Shetland Sheepdog puppies are at a somewhat elevated risk for developing the following conditions:

  •    Hip Dysplasia
  •    PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)
  •    Cataracts
  •    Allergies
  •    Von Willebrand’s Disease
  •    Epilepsy

Some of the most common health concerns for Shelties include hip dysplasia, eye disorders such as progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and skin allergies. Shelties are also susceptible to von Willebrand’s disease, a hereditary blood disorder that can cause serious bleeding.

With some basic knowledge of the breed’s health concerns, you can be sure to give your Sheltie the best possible chance at a long and healthy life. Finding a Shetland Sheepdog puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. At Keystone Puppies, we work exclusively with experienced breeders who are committed to producing healthy & happy pups. Sheltie Puppies Coat & Coat Care

Bred to withstand the harsh conditions of their native climate, Shetland Sheepdogs have thick double coats that protect them from the cold and wet weather. Shelties come in a variety of coat colors, including black, brown, gray, and fawn. The most important thing to remember when caring for a Sheltie’s coat is to brush it regularly. This will help to prevent mats and tangles from forming, and it will also help to distribute the natural oils that keep the coat healthy and waterproof.

In addition, it’s important to give your Sheltie a bath every few weeks to keep their coat clean and free of dirt and debris. By following these simple steps, you can help to keep your Sheltie’s coat looking its best.
