Some experts believe that the breed may have been brought to Portugal by the Phoenicians or the Romans, while others claim that the dogs were brought over by Portuguese sailors who used them to help herd fishes and retrieve lost items from the water. In any case, the breed became popular in Portugal, and was eventually imported to the United States in the early 20th century.

Today, the Portuguese water dog is considered a rare breed, and is prized for its intelligence, athleticism, and friendly personality. These dogs are known for their love of water, and are often used as working dogs in coastal areas. They are also popular as pets and show dogs.
