The Portuguese water dog is a breed that is believed to have originated in Portugal. Some experts believe that the breed may have been brought to Portugal by the Phoenicians or the Romans, while others claim that the dogs were brought over by Portuguese sailors who used them to help herd fishes and retrieve lost items from the water. In any case, the breed became popular in Portugal, and was eventually imported to the United States in the early 20th century.

Today, the Portuguese water dog is considered a rare breed, and is prized for its intelligence, athleticism, and friendly personality. These dogs are known for their love of water, and are often used as working dogs in coastal areas. They are also popular as pets and show dogs.

Thanks to their friendly temperament and loyalty, Portuguese Water Dogs make wonderful companions.

Portuguese Water Dog Puppy Health Considerations

Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 11-14 years — our Portuguese Water Dogs for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Portuguese Water Dog puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones.

Portuguese Water Dog puppies are at a somewhat elevated risk for developing the following conditions:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Seizures
  • Ear Infections
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy
  • Cancer
  • Skin Allergies

One of the most common problems seen in Portuguese Water Dogs is hip dysplasia, which is a condition that leads to arthritis and joint pain. Another concern for this breed is epileptic seizures, which can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, stress, and environmental pollutants. Portuguese Water Dogs are also prone to ear infections, so regular cleaning and maintenance of the ears is important.

With some basic knowledge of the breed’s health concerns, you can be sure to give your Portuguese Water Dog the best possible chance at a long and healthy life. Finding a Portuguese Water Dog puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. At Keystone Puppies, we work exclusively with experienced breeders who are committed to producing healthy & happy pups. Portuguese Water Dog Puppies Coat & Coat Care

The Portuguese Water Dog breed is known for their thick, curly coats, which can be either black, brown, or white. Portuguese Water Dogs are relatively easy to groom, but their coats do require some special care. The breed is prone to matting, so it’s important to brush them regularly with a pin brush or deshedding tool. Their coat should also be trimmed every few months to keep it looking neat and tidy.
