This breed originate from China and was used for pulling sleds, hunting and guarding. They are thought to be one of the oldest breeds of dog that are still in existence. The Chinese used the fur for coats and the dogs for food. This breed was brought to the US in the late 19th century.
The Chow Chow was first recognized by the AKC in 1903 and was grouped as Non-Sporting.

This breed has dual layers to help keep them warm in cold weather. The outercoat is dense & rough while the undercoat is soft.
This breed needs groomed on a regular basis. The Chow Chow mats easily so a regular brushing will help to prevent that.
