It is believed that the Saint Bernard was bred by crossing the Tibetan Mastiff with the Greater Swiss Mtn Dog, Great Pyrenees or the Great Dane. The breed used to be a rescue dog for travelers crossing from Switzerland to Italy. The Saint Bernard was first recognized by the AKC in 1885 and was grouped as Working.

Temperament
The Saint Bernard is a large, powerful breed who is also very gentle, loving and intelligent. They are eager to please their families and are good with children, which makes them a great family pet! Interaction with people and other animals is important because this breed can be very protective.
Health
The Saint Bernard life expectancy is between 8 – 10 years. The Saint Bernard is a relatively healthy breed. One common health concern in this breed is Wobblers Syndrome. Other concerns to watch for are:

- Skin Problems
- Cancer
Coat & Coat Care
The Saint Bernard’s coat is very dense & tough. This breed comes with either a short coat (smooth coat) or a long coat (rough coat).
This breed is fairly easy to maintain. Brushing daily with a firm bristle brush should suffice. Only bathe when necessary. St Bernards shed twice a year.
