Overview
The Neapolitan Mastiff breed was thought to have been brought to Rome by Alexander the Great. They were bred for fighting and defending. They were also great guard dogs. This breed was only brought to the USA in the 1970’s and they were recognized by the AKC in 2001 and grouped as Working.

Temperament
The Neapolitan Mastiff breed is intelligent, loyal and protective. They are very calm and gentle which is surprising given their size. They are a good family dog as they love children and rarely are aggressive. They love to be around their family and thrive on attention.
Health
The average life span of a Mastiff is between 10 – 12 years. Some health issues to watch for in this breed are:
- Cherry Eye
- Hip Dysplasia
- Heart Problems
- Overheating
Coat & Coat Care
The Neapolitan Mastiff breed has a short & hard coat.
This breed requires little maintenance to keep their coats nice and healthy. Brush occasionally with a hard bristle brush and bathe when necessary.
