Pekingese Overview

The Pekingese was treated as royalty and was very sacred in China about 2000 years ago. They were little Lions and were sought after. In 1860 the British overtook the Chinese Imperial Palace. Chinese Imperial Guards were ordered to kill the little dogs to prevent them from falling into the hands of the “foreign devils.” Five of the Pekingese survived and were given to Queen Victoria. It was from these five dogs that the modern day Pekingese descended.
The Pekingese breed was first registered by the AKC in 1915 and Grouped as Toy.

The Pekingese are loyal, lively and independent. They are happy, friendly, affectionate and enjoy being indoors with their families. This breed tends to be a little leery of strangers.

The Pekingese life expectancy is between 13 – 15 years. Some health concerns to watch for are:

  • Breathing Problems
  • Corneal Ulcers

Pekingese Coat

The Pekingese has a double coat. The top coat is thick & coarse and the undercoat is short but there plenty of it! Their fur feels harsh and is long.

Daily brushing is recommended to maintain a healthy coat and avoid any matting. Grooming is also recommended!
